Bisphenol A (BPA) plant consists of Phenol, Acetone and Bisphenol A production facilities. The plant is a precursor in the production process chain at Kazanorgsintez PJSC. Main output of the plant is bisphenol A, phenol and acetone. Basic raw materials are propylene and benzene. Most of the manufactured phenol (about 85%) and acetone (about 45%) are used as raw materials in the production of Bisphenol A.
Phenol and acetone are produced by cumene method from benzene and propylene. Phenol is used for the production of caprolactam, diphenylpropane, medical supplies, synthetic resins, plasticizers and herbicides.
Acetone is used for the production of acetic anhydride, acetonecyanhydrine, diphenylolpropane, and as a solvent in various industries.
The Bisphenol A plant was built within a two-year period. At the beginning of October 2004, OJSC Kazanorgsintez together with TAIF JSC signed the License and Basic Design agreements for Bisphenol A plant with Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd, Japan. And on 27 October 2007 the plant launched a commercial manufacture of the target BPA product in a granular form.
According to this method Bisphenol A is produced by the condensation of phenol and acetone in presence of a catalyst – cation exchange resin.
The BPA produced under this process is characterized by high purity.
Bisphenol A is mainly used (85-90%) in the production of polycarbonate at Kazanorgsintez PJSC.
The second largest area of the BPA end use is manufacture of the epoxide resins applied for paints and varnishes and powder coatings, adhesives, components to electronic circuit boards.
Other applications of the BPA include polysulfone resins, polyarylate resins, special phenolic resins, polyester imide resins, unsaturated ester resins, brominated flame retardants and stabilizers for various polymers.
